Britain’s most nostalgic childhood meals revealed – does yours make the list?

  • Roast dinners, fish fingers and Arctic Roll are among the foods that take us back to our childhoods

It doesn’t matter how old we are – the memory of our mum’s cooking is most likely to take us right back to our childhood.

Family roast dinners topped a list of the nation’s most nostalgic food – and who can resist the child-like delight of dunking a soldier in a soft-boiled egg?

Baked beans on toast, fish fingers and macaroni cheese are childhood favourites that we happily tuck into as adults.

Classic desserts of tinned peaches, rice pudding, trifle and Viennetta are still popular today.

The poll of 2,000 adults aged over 35 shows food that speaks to a certain generations.

Who remembers dinners of Findus Crispy Pancakes, chicken Kiev followed by Arctic Roll or a choc ice?

Even I’m a Celebrity winner Harry Redknapp is partial to jam roly poly.

Harry, 71, pined for his favourite pud while in the jungle and barely a day went by when he didn’t mention it.

He told campmates: “Jam poly pudding – I just love it.

“My old nan used to make it, it was a taste of my childhood really. It brings back good memories.”

Just the smell and memory of our childhood food makes us happy, the study by cinema chain Vue has revealed.

But also visiting parents or grandparents, a trip to the seaside, park of swimming pool also made us feel nostalgic for our youth.

Jamie Graham, Vue’s head of retail said: “This research proves how much food takes us back to the past.

“We’re delighted to give people the chance to travel back into their memories by enjoying a coke float while they enjoy the best in Big Screen Entertainment.”
