STRESSED OUT BRITAIN: Over half of Brits are kept up most nights because of stress at work
- A new study has found that as many as 30 per cent of working adults have been to their GP in the last 12 months to find a cure for work-related stress
Over half (53 percent) of Brits claim their job is so stressful, they are kept awake MOST NIGHTS, according to a new study.
A nationwide survey of British workers has revealed the extent to which millions of UK adults believe their career is causing them untold stress, anxiety and insomnia.
According to the study, it now takes the average worker 40 minutes of tossing and turning to finally get to sleep after turning the light out. We then wake up a further three times during the night in a panic about pressing deadlines, issues with the boss, or fellow colleagues making things difficult for us.
In fact, as many as 30 percent of working adults have been to their GP in the last 12 month, in a desperate bid to find a cure for work related stress and anxiety. And research found that it is a vicious cycle, with more than half of the nation saying lack of sleep leads to yet MORE stress and 47 percent claiming they are totally exhausted by it.
And the findings are bad news for the nation’s employers too, because a lack of sleep is damaging the nation’s productivity, with the average Brit turning up late for work TWICE a month because of sleep issues, missing the equivalent of a full working day every year because of lateness.
In fact, the study found that lateness alone costs Britain at least 221 million working hours every single year, with a separate report from Round Europe published in 2016 indicating fatigue costs the UK economy £40 billion every year.
According to the data, the average worker survives on just 5 hours 42 minutes sleep on a weekday, which is well short of the seven to nine hours of sleep recommended by experts.
In fact, over three quarters (76 percent) of the nation’s workers have had a night where they simply couldn’t drift off and didn’t sleep a wink, and for a weary ten percent this happens once a week.
This leads to a plethora of problems at work. While four out of ten people say they aren’t as productive, the troubles go even deeper: 35 percent of people say they get so tired they can’t concentrate, with the same number claiming they don’t perform as well as they should due to sheer exhaustion.
Over a quarter (26 percent) of British workers admit they’ve have made mistakes because of tiredness, 13 percent have clashed with colleagues, and one in ten have even fallen asleep at work.
“There number of reasons for the nation’s sleep struggles” says sleep expert, James Wilson. “It is normal when we are stressed or anxious and in fight or flight mode, for our bodies to struggle to drift off. If we are getting into bed and haven’t wound down properly, a drop in the light levels and doing activities that lower the heart rate can really help.”

Added to the fact that over half (53 percent) of Brits admit to having taken a sickie because they failed to slumber well. And 28 percent of Brits say they spend all day at working thinking about being able to go home to bed.
And more than a fifth (21 percent) said that they spend every single work day feeling exhausted, only to be unable to drop off at bedtime.
19 percent of British workers claim to have no proper sleep routine, and more than one in ten (11 percent) confess that lack of sleep in ruining their life. Cambridge is the sleepiest city in the UK, where residents get on average 6 hrs 12 minutes, which is much more than Mancunians who struggle by on just 5 hrs 20 minutes.
